Social Security Administration to Implement New Rules for Accessing Accounts by March 31, 2025

March 21, 2025

The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently announced new measures aimed at implementing tighter identity-proofing features. Starting March 31, 2025, applicants and recipients will be required to use the online portal to complete identity verification instead of interacting with the agency over the phone. Those who are unable to verify through the portal will be required to visit an agency field office.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has published a list of nearly 800 SSA offices it seeks to close, 26 of which are confirmed to close this year. There are over 1400 SSA offices nationwide. If successful in its efforts, more than 50% of offices could close. How should you prepare for the transition?

New Users: Create a Login.gov Account

On the SSA website, you will be prompted to "Create an Account Using Login.gov". The account creation process is straightforward: you will be prompted to verify your identity through email verification, personal details, and setting up two-factor authentication.

A Login.gov account allows you to access many U.S. government websites with the same user credentials. It is beneficial to create one even if you are not currently eligible for Social Security benefits.

Current Users: Transition Your Account to Maintain Continuous Access to Online Services

If you created a Social Security username more than 3 years ago, you will need to transition to a new or existing Login.gov account or use an ID.me account to have continuous access to online services. For step-by-step instructions on how to make the transition, watch thisvideo.

If you created your personalmySocial Securityaccount on or after September 18, 2021, no action is necessary because you already have the right setup. We suggest logging into your account to ensure it's transitioned even if you created it recently. Additionally, if you need to change your address or direct deposit information, make sure it's updated before March 31, 2025. After this date, it may be more difficult to do so.

These changes affect all Americans, especially the elderly, Americans with disabilities, mobility limitations, and those who live far from SSA offices. Make sure you complete the suggested steps promptly to stay ahead of these changes!
